U2 Mega Thread - Muzic and Moviez
This thread is our contribution to U2 lovers around the world. They are one of the greatest Rock n Roll bands of all time and they continue to smoke. Their new album is due out soon and so as we prepare for their first studio album in 4 years we give you the Ultimate U2 Thread! We will be updating this thread often so please check back. Both versions are amazing but the nod goes to 11 O’Clock. This is the best version of this song we know of! Low Point: Though we love the song normally but this version of Zoo Station is the low point. Don’t know if Bono’s voice just couldn’t handle it at this point in the tour but it sounds like he isn’t even singing but talking. It sounds hollow. Unique Contribution: What is great about this album is the arrangement. Though it is doctored it is doctored in a good way. This is a tough decision since the album pound for pound is their best (yes, even better than the Tree!). We give the nod to End of the World as the high point. It is one of our favorite all-time songs. The Fly and Mysterious Ways are up there as well. Low Point: Sorry! We cannot think of one. The album is just too dope! Unique Contribution: U2 made a huge transformation from Joshua Tree to Achtung Baby. What is great is they rocked on both sides of the transformation. This is a must have album for anybody interested in U2. It has an edge to it the previous albums don’t. There is also a depth and creativity to their lyrics and music not yet heard. U2 is one of those bands that at times sounds better live than in studio. This is a great version of this song. To begin the show with Mofo was pretty bold but they pulled it off. Not one of our favorite songs but it sure is good to kick things off. Low Point: How in the world do you end the show with Wake Up Dead Man? We love the song but come on! Of all they had to choose from, they went that direction. Lemon (Perfecto Remix) isn’t very strong either. It looks like it was during the intermission. Unique Contribution: 26 live songs! The whole album is there, newly remastered with additional tracks. This album was originally released in 1980 and you can already see the signs that this band, if they stay together, is poised for great things. Clearly influenced by the punk music scene, their music doesn’t fall into the same trap punk tends toward. Some great songs including I Will Follow, Twilight, Another Time, Another Place and Electric Co. There is also the hints of the good things to come in War, Joshua Tree and even as far into How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. It was primarily recorded as a DVD but we have both the movies and the album. We have attached both nights of the recording which is pretty cool. My favorite part of the album is the beginning of Elevation. Bono refers to it at as flirting with the fans. “It’s ok to flirt.” Great intro to a good song. Another highlight is Bono’s ability to nail Miss Sarajevo. He is no Pavarotti but he does a sweet job. The girl Bono dances with in the video is interesting. You will have to check it out. The only disappointing thing about this album is the overall choice of the songs. Out of two shows and with only 11 songs, their choice of songs could have been better. Code:

First, you cannot understand or appreciate U2 with a quick listen. I didn’t like this album the first few times I heard it. The more I hear, the better it gets. Second, it might not be the best they have ever done but that is a testimony of how sweet their older stuff is and how untouchable it remains. For the most part, they still tower over the music world even though they are not pumping out the best stuff they have ever done. Third, they are still moving in new directions. This album breaks the mold of ATYCLB and HTDAAB (thankfully!). Fez – Being Born is a case in point. It has the U2 flavor we know and love and yet it comes in a new package. High Point – At this point, Magnificent is on the top of the list. The intro sounds great and then the Edge start to kick it. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the song that opens their live shows. I can see them making an extended intro as they walk on stage and then rock the house. Fez and Breathe are continuing to grow on me as well. Low Point – At this point it has to be the mid point of the album - Get On Your Boots and Stand Up Comedy. Too cheesy and too commercial! I’ll Go Crazy has the feel of their last two albums – ear candy - but it isn’t too bad. Code:

It has some excellent tracks – Please, Staring at the Sun, Gone, Last Night on Earth, Do You Feel Loved. It has come tracks that take a some time to appreciate – Wake Up Dead Man, If God Will Send His Angels. Others are way out there and one wonders how they made it on any U2 album – Miami, Mansion for instance. If you have steered clear of this album, you shouldn’t. Overall this album is great. It is another testimony to the fact that they can go in different directions as a band and still kick ass. Everybody recognizes this fact with Achtung Baby. Pop is no Achtung Baby (don’t misunderstand me) but it proves that when they want to change their musical direction they remain on top of the game. Code:

Having said that, it still has some great tunes. The Wanderer is amazing even with its circus feel. Stay remains a favorite along with Lemon and First Time. The lyrics of this album are overtly heavy for U2. They deal with the shadier parts of life. They cover everything from porn to leaving faith to the one who searches for meaning and what’s right in all the wrong places. This album has ac certain "edge" all the way through it. Code:

And this album contains one of their top 3 or 4 songs of all time – New Year’s Day. These songs not only rock on the album but if you have heard U2 live then you know they remain alive and vibrant almost 30 years later. Sunday and New Year’s Day are staples of their live stuff.
